Lysol is a worldwide popular product available in many households for the purpose of cleaning and disinfecting. It is available in most houses as a household cleaning product. It was originated by a U.S based company Reckitt Benckiser. But do you know what was Lysol originally used for or how its uses changed over time?

   Origination Of Lysol

Lysol is prepared in many factories located all over the world and is a famous household cleaning product in most European houses. But do u know a few decades back the product was marketed with a completely different purpose?

In 1899, Gustav Raupenstrauch, discovered Lysol as a disinfectant and antiseptic product to fight against the cholera epidemic situation in Germany.

In 1918, the Spanish flu pandemic occurred and during that time Lysol was re-advertised. This time Lehn and Fink claimed Lysol to be an effective product against the influenza virus.

In the year 1930 Lysol was marketed in pharmacies, drug stores, and hospitals. The company introduced the Lysol disinfectant spray in 1962.

In the 1920s, as reported by the HuffPost, Lysol was advertised as Lyson (a feminine hygiene product). The cleaning brand published a vintage advertisement. They marketed Lysol as a vaginal douche.

It does sound painful but they said that it can help women maintain their vaginal hygiene, reduce odor, and preventgenital infections.

According to the publication, the story behind this feminine hygiene product was something else. More than a feminine hygiene product it was used as a birth control product. During the 1920s oral contraceptives were not discovered and condoms were quite expensive making them not easily accessible by everyone.

Therefore, women used Lysol solution as a DIY contraceptive mixture. But the result of this DIY method was disastrous. The writer of mother Jones, Nicole Pasulka, reported the deaths of hundreds of people using Lysol solution internally at the beginning of the 20th century. Women death were also reported who used Lysol as a contraceptive.

Lysol does not have any contraceptive properties and it cannot provide protection from unwanted pregnancies. The Lysol DIY birth control was nothing more than random luck. Therefore, this disinfectant and cleaning product should not be used internally for any purpose.

How was Lysol used as a contraceptive?                           

In 1920 since oral contraceptives were not Discovered at that time and condoms were not an affordable option for all. Women started using Lysol solution as a DIY birth control product. Lyson was introduced as feminine hygiene vaginal douche. It later resulted in multiple deaths because of the harmful effects of the internal use of Lysol.

Recently, the company itself released a statement that “under no circumstances should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body”.

They further added that “Lysol disinfecting and cleaning products are for surfaces and not for personal use. They cannot be used on the body or on food and always should be used as directed.”

Lysol has introduced a wide range of products like multi-surface cleaners, wipes, and disinfectant sprays. Its disinfectant sprays are useful against viruses, fungi, bacteria, and molds on surfaces.

The company has also introduced its hand washing soaps and hand sanitizers claiming to kill 99.9% of bacteria. All the products of this company are designed for only external use.

Is Lysol harmful

Lysol is helpful when you are using it as a disinfectant on surfaces but it is extremely dangerous when you use it on humans or pets. Direct contact with Lysol can lead to skin irritation and eye irritation. You should always wash your hands with antibacterial soap after coming in contact with Lysol. You should also wear an eye shield to prevent eye infections.

Lysol should be kept away from food and drinks at their ingestion is poisonous. Some suicide cases in America were also reported when people drink Lysol to kill themselves. Lysol is harmful to pets as it can cause skin, respiratory, central nervous system, and liver abnormalities. Lysol can even cause death.

Whether it is Lysol or any other product one should never use it without any data about proper research on it. Lysol should be kept on the upper shelves out of the reach of children and pets to prevent any unwanted accidents
