In 1899, Gustav Raupenstrauch, discovered Lysol as a disinfectant and antiseptic product to fight against the cholera epidemic situation in Germany.

In the 1920s, as reported by the HuffPost, Lysol was advertised as Lyson (a feminine hygiene product). The cleaning brand published a vintage advertisement. They marketed Lysol as a vaginal douche.
It does sound painful but they said that it can help women maintain their vaginal hygiene, reduce odor, and preventgenital infections.
According to the publication, the story behind this feminine hygiene product was something else. More than a feminine hygiene product it was used as a birth control product. During the 1920s oral contraceptives were not discovered and condoms were quite expensive making them not easily accessible by everyone.
Therefore, women used Lysol solution as a DIY contraceptive mixture. But the result of this DIY method was disastrous. The writer of mother Jones, Nicole Pasulka, reported the deaths of hundreds of people using Lysol solution internally at the beginning of the 20th century. Women death were also reported who used Lysol as a contraceptive.
Lysol does not have any contraceptive properties and it cannot provide protection from unwanted pregnancies. The Lysol DIY birth control was nothing more than random luck. Therefore, this disinfectant and cleaning product should not be used internally for any purpose.

They further added that “Lysol disinfecting and cleaning products are for surfaces and not for personal use. They cannot be used on the body or on food and always should be used as directed.”
